A normal land surveyor will only measure a few points on the ground many 100's of feet apart. A G.P.S. track map provides a position approximately every yard. We survey at least five lines around the track. An inside and outside line marking the boundaries of the track, and several midlines representing the track surface.
This provides an accurate three dimensional picture of the camber and gradient of the track surface at every point on the circuit.
Each map contains tens of thousands of individual points, some maps contain over 100,000 !
The G.P.S. team uses a combination of GPS and GLONASS satellite technology to achieve accuracy of one or two cm for each logged point.
A finished G.P.S. map is delivered as a computer file. We can deliver a map in any number of formats. The most common being a standard text file with header information followed by a list of co-ordinates. We can deliver our map in any format specified by the customer e.g. a csv file or a bespoke customer format.
A G.P.S. map normally includes at least five lines around the track, an outline of all kerbs, paint lines such as the start finish line, the pit lane, run off areas and track links. We can also for provide detailed outlines for all track features such as gravel traps, tyre walls and other barriers if required.
No. All previous work carried out by G.P.S ltd. has been exclusive to each individual customer.
In the past these maps have been used mainly by motor racing teams to run complex simulations of their cars upon. They have also been used by the computer games industry to provide incredibly realistic graphics. Some of motor sports governing bodies have also shown interest from a safety point o f view as our maps can be used to estimate a cars speed at any point on the track and its distance from any barrier.
The cost of a track map is dependent on a number of factors. The most important being the size of the track, the level of detail required and the location of the track. The cost of a survey can be anything between $5,000 & $25,000. dependent on track size, location and the number of surveys ordered.

No. Track access is usually arranged by the team or motor manufacturer we are contracted to. It is not impossible for us to arrange access but we are usually charged for the privilege. It is common practice for us to survey the track during a race weekend as the track is in race trim and it is easier for access and security to be arranged.
